The book covers thimbles relating to Southern Africa, both past and present, including 50 local thimble makers and artists who have created uniquely Southern African thimbles. Thimbles have been made from a variety of materials such as ivory, Zulu beadwork, porcelain, and sterling silver.

An entire chapter is devoted to thimbles and sewing items commemorating the Anglo Boer War (1898 - 1902) as well as sewing tools made by the Prisoners of War. The chapter on commemoratives includes thimbles made to celebrate the release of Nelson Mandela as a political prisoner as well as his inauguration as President of South Africa.
